Respond, Don’t React: The Power of a Different Approach
When a person living with dementia displays a challenging behavior, it's often a form of communication—not intentional defiance. Our instinct may be to react out of frustration, fear, or urgency, but taking a moment to respond with curiosity and compassion can completely change the outcome.
A reaction often escalates emotions, increasing confusion, anxiety, or resistance. A thoughtful response, however, seeks to understand the why behind the behavior. Is the person in pain? Overstimulated? Frightened? Trying to express an unmet need?
By slowing down, validating their feelings, and adapting your approach, you can transform a potentially stressful encounter into one built on trust, comfort, and connection. The behavior may not disappear immediately, but the person feels heard, respected, and supported.
In dementia care, it's often not about changing the person's behavior—it's about changing our response. That simple shift can make all the difference for both the individual living with dementia and the caregiver.

Groundbreaking Alzheimer’s Research
A simple blood test is something that could change the future of Alzheimer's disease. New research highlighted by The People's Pharmacy explores a biomarker called p-tau217, which may be able to identify a person's risk of developing Alzheimer's years before symptoms appear. The article also revisits the famous Nun Study, which found that some individuals remained cognitively sharp despite having significant Alzheimer's-related changes in their brains, highlighting the powerful role of brain resilience and cognitive capacity.
If these findings continue to be validated, they could revolutionize how we approach Alzheimer's disease—allowing for earlier detection, more timely interventions, and personalized care long before memory loss begins. While there is still more research to be done, this is an exciting step toward a future where prevention and early treatment may become just as important as diagnosis.
